VIC: At Home With the Architect Visits Elsternwick

1610 a1

This month's VIC At Home with the Architect, visits a compact residence in Elsternwick designed by Jackson Clements Burrows Architects that was awarded a commendation in the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) 2015 Victorian Architecture Awards. On Sunday 23 October, tour participants will be able to explore the interiors and exteriors of the ‘Hiding House’ as the architect explains its design.

Built on a ‘battle-axe’ shaped block that was once a suburban tennis court, the design of the two storey residence was inspired by the clients desire for tranquility and seclusion from the street and a need for privacy from the site’s 11 surrounding neighbours.

The home is composed of a series of interlocking rooms and gardens that create spatial variety, while allowing the house to adapt to changing needs. Doors and windows slide open and closed, revealing views and protecting privacy.
