This month's NSW At Home with the Architect, visits a sustainable renovation of a residence in Alexandria designed by CplusC Architectural Workshop. On Sunday 25 September, tour participants will be able to explore the interiors and exteriors of the home as Clinton Cole explains its design.
Inspired by their environmentally conscious and socially responsible clients, the two bedroom terrace house was designed to be essentially carbon neutral and is a positive model for how inner city residential design can impact on place making and community engagement.
The home includes an aquaponics system for fish harvesting, rain water storage for use throughout the home, a wicking bed to filter water, compost, a worm farm and chicken coop working in harmony with a productive vegetable garden, an evacuated glass tube solar hot water system and a 3KW photovoltaic power generation system to run the home and charge the couple's electric car.
Clinton Cole discussed how the home is ‘…a vital example of what architecture needs to be’. It illustrates how sensitive architectural design can be a powerful way to facilitate connections with the local community. Through the sharing of vegetables, herbs and eggs produced on site, the clients have met people on their street they have lived next to for many years but not met until now.
