On Saturday 6 December 2014 the Australian Architecture Association launched a new addition to its program of Sydney walking tours - The Northbridge Walk.
The Association's Vice President, architect Ben Gerstel, developed the walk as he knows this area well. It is a circular walk, starting and finishing at Bonds Corner Cafe on Sailors Bay Road.
Since it was the inaugural walk, Ben arranged for the new Mayor Councillor of Willoughby City Council, Gail Giles-Gidney, to launch it. The walk was a great success, albeit very hot! There were 20 attendees along with members of the AAA committee.
17 houses are on the tour and the group were lucky enough to be invited into one of these houses. The house was the Snelling House designed by Douglas Snelling. The owner heard Ben talking about the house and he opened his front door to us. The house was designed in the 1950's and renovated by Alec Tzannes in 1996. It is a wonderful house as it steps down the site to Sailors Bay.
There are a wide variety of houses on the tour by some of Sydney's big names like Harry Seidler, Luigi Rosselli, Jorge Hrdina and even an ex prime minister's house. Also on the walk are amazing views of Middle Harbour.
At the end of the tour, the mayor spoke a few encouraging words about the relevance of the AAA and the importance of this association and what it delivers to the public of Sydney. To mark the occasion, also at the end of the tour, canapés and drinks were organised through the Bonds Corner Cafe and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
The next Northbridge Walk takes place on Saturday 6 June. To book your place on the tour click here.
