The Ultimo Architecture as Art walk takes place on Saturday 12 September. Ultimo is one of Sydney’s most fascinating inner-city precincts, where layers of Aboriginal, colonial, industrial, educational and contemporary architectural history sit side by side.
Located on the traditional lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the area developed rapidly during the nineteenth century as industry, railways and education expanded around nearby Darling Harbour. This transformation of Ultimo is reflected in the rich diversity of its architecture.
Beginning at the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, one of the final major works designed by celebrated modernist architect Harry Seidler, the walk explores a number of buildings that reflect the changes that have occured in the area since colonial settlement.
Hear about a 6 Green Star rated building which has a ‘’Doppler Effect” façade, first one of its’ kind in Australia and see how the Goods Line was transformed from a disused freight railway line.
Don’t miss out on seeing the building described as the most beautiful squashed paper bag by architect Frank Gehry.
Book today and enjoy seeing some architectural gems in Ultimo.
