This months @home takes place on Sunday 30 August, visiting a new home in Queens Park, designed by Porebski Architects. This residence is shaped by its east–west site, where light becomes the primary design material. An L-shaped rear plan gathers northern sun and draws it deep into the home, while an off-form concrete skylight and double-height windows cast daylight through the centre, binding kitchen, dining and living into a single luminous sequence.
The fall of the land is not concealed but celebrated, said Alex Porebski, Director of Porebski Architects. Living spaces sit one metre below the street, allowing the house to unfold through moments of compression, pause and release—from the grounded entry to the expansive stair void and the open volume of the rear living room.
At the rear, the recessed pool is both landscape and reflection, a calm surface seen from the entry and living spaces. A 3.7-metre glass wall softens the boundary between interior and garden, allowing terrace, water and room to read as one continuous threshold.The material palette is elemental and tactile.
Copper, timber battens and off-form concrete give depth and rhythm to the street façade, while brass carries a warmer metallic thread through the interior. Face blockwork and pink terrazzo ground the house in a continuous, enduring surface.Concrete ceilings and beams extend toward the cantilevered rear roof, forming a sheltered edge to the garden, while timber battens bring texture and shadow to selected walls and ceilings. Solid blockwork and terrazzo provide thermal ballast, tempered by northern skylights and low-e glazing.

Porebski Architects was founded in 1972 by Andre Porebski, a Polish immigrant who studied architecture at Sydney University. Upon Andres' retirement the practice has continued under the leadership of his children, registered architect Alex Porebski and interior designer Victoria D'Alisa.
