Walking Redferns Architecture

The Australian Architecture Association (AAA) Redfern Tour offers an engaging exploration of one of Sydney’s most historically layered and rapidly evolving inner-city neighbourhoods. Moving through Redfern’s streets, the tour examines the area’s distinctive mix of Victorian terraces, former industrial buildings, social housing and contemporary residential and commercial developments.

Along the way, participants gain an understanding of how Redfern has changed over time and how architects have responded to its existing urban fabric, heritage, changing demographics and increasing development pressures. The tour encourages participants to look beyond individual buildings and consider the broader relationship between architecture, streets, public spaces and the communities that use them.

Led by Kian, the tour benefits from her knowledge of architecture and her ability to communicate architectural ideas in an accessible and engaging way. Rather than simply identifying buildings and architects, Kian provides context for what participants are seeing, drawing attention to materials, scale, form, planning and the relationship between new development and Redfern’s historic character.

Her relaxed and informative approach encourages questions and discussion, making the tour accessible to people with a professional interest in architecture as well as members of the public who are simply curious about the city around them.

Through Kian’s commentary, Redfern becomes a fascinating case study in how Sydney continues to adapt, conserve and reinvent its urban neighbourhoods.

If you missed our August tour, you can join the next Refern Walk in November.
